RTO stands for ‘registered training organisation’. RTO are registered by state and territory training authorities to deliver nationally recognised training—which means training that:

• is recognised by all RTOs throughout Australia
• is part of a Training Package that has been developed to meet the needs of a particular industry, and
• results in a qualification that is part of the Australian Qualifications Framework .

An RTO can be a government department or a private enterprise, and training does not have to be its core business—for example, Qantas is an RTO. Panel beaters, schools, TAFE colleges and beauty therapists are all examples of organisations that can be RTO.
